“At the Assembly Hall:  Leo Cicero (the Grand Duke) (left) and Ernest Thesiger (the Cardinal of Pisa) in The Hidden King.  Jonathan Griffin’s verse drama was given its world premiere at the start of the Festival.  The plot concerns a Renaissance King of Portugal who was believed to have been killed in battle but, twenty years later, appears in Venice to claim his throne  He renounces it to avoid civil war.  The play has been severely criticised both for its length and construction.”
